Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the oasis so shallow?

Many birds can't swim and bathing is crucial for their health so the pool is shallow enough for them to stand in the water and bathe without risk of drowning. The Audubon Society recommends that bird baths be no deeper than 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm)

How often should I clean it?

Preener oases are designed to make cleaning and refilling fast and easy, in hopes that you will provide fresh water daily. Insects and animals in your local ecosystem require and enjoy fresh water as much as you do.

Twice monthly or so, use non-abrasive cleaners and sponges or plastic scrub pads. Peroxide mixed with baking soda can be used to kill germs and a small amount will not harm your nearby plants. Bleach or vinegar are good choices but should be diluted (nine parts water to one part bleach or vinegar) since high concentrations will harm your nearby plants and damage the surface of the polished granite, making it harder to keep clean. Always rinse thoroughly after a deep cleaning and before refilling the bowl.

Is the Timeless Granite Oasis too heavy for the average person to lift?

This is a hand-carved item and the average weight is 35 pounds (16 kg), so about the same as four gallons of water or a 3-year-old child. While assistance may be required for some people, individuals of average strength can manage it.

Will granite crack in extreme heat or cold?

This is unlikely. Structures and sculptures made of granite have endured in diverse environments for centuries, a testament to it's exceptional strength and resilience.

Where should I place the oasis?

The oasis is intended to be placed on or low to the ground to provide essential water for all your local wildlife. As the product photos show, it makes a great topper for tree stumps.

Keep in mind that birds are very cautious and prefer not to perch or bathe close to shrubs where a predator may be hiding, so areas with low-growing plants are best.

If possible, position it to observe and enjoy the activity around the oasis. If that's not an option, we encourage you to consider installing a motion-activated wildlife camera. It's great fun!

For everyone's safety, please ensure that the oasis is stable and cannot be easily tipped over.

Should I place it in the sun or the shade?

In regions of intense heat, place it in the shade to prevent overheating the water. In colder climates, a spot in the sun is best.

What if the water freezes in winter?

Freezing temperatures will not harm the granite, but animals require fresh drinking water year-round. We recommend using a thermostatically controlled heater to prevent freezing in winter. Chicken water heaters fit perfectly underneath the oasis and are available at several stores online for around $30. Do not use a hammer or other tool to break ice in the oasis, as this could crack the granite.

Why do I need a cleaning brush when the hose works fine for rinsing & refilling?

The brush is provided for situations where the oasis is positioned out of reach of the hose. A gallon of water and the brush can be used to clean and refill the oasis when the hose is not handy. In addition, we find that the brush helps with cleaning even when the hose is used.
